LIEUTENANT COLONEL. COMMANDED THE 3RD ARMORED DIVISION AND THEN THE IV ARMORED CORPS IN 1942. IN 1943 IV CORPS WAS DESIGNATED XX CORPS AND HE LED IT FOR THE REST OF THE WAR. HE WAS PROMOTED TO LIEUTENANT GENERAL IN 1945. HE TOOK PART IN THE DRIVE ACROSS FRANCE FOLLOWING THE NORMANDY INVASION, THE CAPTURE OF METZ AND THE LIBERATION OF BUCHENWALD. DURING HIS CAREER, HE WAS THE RECIPIENT OF THE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS WITH OAK LEAF CLUSTER, THE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE MEDAL WITH OAK LEAF CLUSTER, THE SILVER STAR WITH 2 OAK LEAF CLUSTERS, THE LEGION OF MERIT, THE DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS AND THE AIR MEDAL WITH OAK LEAF CLUSTER. HE SERVED UNDER THE COMMAND OF GENERAL GEORGE S. PATTON.
