ENLISTED AS AN AVIATION CADET IN THE ARMY AIR CORPS ON 14 JULY 1941 AT CAMP BOWIE, BROWNWOOD, TEXAS. ASSIGNED TO THE EUROPEAN THEATRE OF OPERATIONS, 8TH AIR FORCE, 306TH BOMBARDMENT GROUP (HEAVY), 369TH BOMB SQUADRON BASED AT U.S. ARMY AIR FORCE STATION #111, ROYAL AIR FORCE, THURLEIGH, NEAR BEDFORD, ENGLAND. AS A B-17 FLYING FORTRESS PILOT, HE FLEW MISSIONS OVER THE EUROPEAN THEATER OF OPERATIONS, INCLUDING THE FIRST DAYTIME BOMBING MISSIONS OVER GERMANY WITHOUT FIGHTER ESCORTS. HIS AWARDS AND DECORATIONS INCLUDE THE SILVER STAR.
