ACTIVITY DURING WWII

RANK: LIEUTENANT COLONEL. HE GRADUATED FROM WEST POINT WITH THE CLASS OF 1939. SERVED AS COMMANDER OF THE 1ST BATTALION, 506TH PARACHUTE INFANTRY REGIMENT, 101ST AIRBORNE ‘SCREAMING EAGLES’ DIVISION IN THE EUROPEAN THEATER OF OPERATIONS. HE WAS A PARATROOPER WHO JUMPED INTO FRANCE IN THE EARLY MORNING HOURS ON D-DAY, JUNE 6, 1944, OPERATION OVERLORD, THE INVASION OF GERMANY’S FORTRESS EUROPE AND A 2ND COMBAT JUMP INTO HOLLAND, OPERATION MARKET GARDEN. CAMPAIGNS AND BATTLES: NORMANDY, MARKET GARDEN AND THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE. KILLED IN ACTION TUESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1944 IN HIS COMMAND POST BY A GERMANY ARTILLERY BARRAGE IN THE VICINITY OF NOVILLE, BELGIUM, BATTLE OF THE BULGE CAMPAIGN. DECORATIONS AND MEDALS: SILVER STAR WITH 1 BRONZE OAK LEAF CLUSTER, AWARDED FOR DISTINGUISHED GALLANTRY IN ACTION. HIS DIVISION WAS AWARDED A PRESIDENTIAL UNIT CITATION WITH 1 OAK LEAF CLUSTER, MERITORIOUS UNIT COMMENDATION, FRENCH CROIX DE GUERRE WITH PALM, BELGIAN CROIX DE GUERRE WITH PALM, BELGIAN FOURRAGERE OF 1940 AND THE ORANGE LANYARD OF THE ROYAL NETHERLANDS ARMY FOR EXTRAORDINARY HEROISM IN ACTION AGAINST THE GERMAN ARMED FORCES. HIS REMAINS WERE RETURNED TO NEW YORK IN 1949 FOR BURIAL, WITH INTERMENT IN THE UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY CEMETERY, WEST POINT, NEW YORK.
